The School of Music at Portland State began its internationally known Kodály Certification Program twenty years ago. Over the years the program has grown from one professor teaching all classes to four teachers instructing students from all over the world in the Kodály technique. Our program is certified by the American Organization of Kodály Educators (OAKE).
Since its inception in the early 1990’s. the program has continued to grow and expand each year as undergraduate students who enroll in the summer levels program return and retrain in their early teaching years. Additionally, the consistent presence of Susan Brumfield and Carol Brown has created a vibrant “Kodaly culture” that takes place in the beautiful Park Blocks of Portland in high summer. Students hail from throughout the United State and abroad . The local Kodaly Chapter (SWOKE) is involved as well, serving as hosts and participating in the social activities of the Levels Course. They also sponsor 3 workshops per year, keeping strong ties to the Portland State University Levels course. In October of 2013, Portland State University hosted the Western Divisional OAKE Conference.
Faculty for the PSU Levels have included Jill Trinka, Anna Kovacs, Rita Klinger, Susan Brumfield, Victoria Loebell, Carol Brown, Seán Deibler, Amy Rheingans, Rochelle Mann, Andy Paney, David Vinden, Lenka Igo, and Katalin Kiss.
